Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This page is for persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, parents or caregivers to find out how to get started in sports.
Support for Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing can explore recreational sport activities through the following organisations and groups:
The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf)
Deaf Sports Association (Singapore)
For Adults with Disabilities and Special Needs
Enabling Services Hubs (ESHs) offer community support for persons with disabilities and their caregivers closer to their homes. The establishment of ESHs is part of efforts under the Enabling Masterplan 2030 and takes a regional approach to bring community support services closer to the homes of persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
By joining an ESH, adults who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their caregivers will have opportunities to participate in sport and fitness activities.
Enabling Services Hubs are currently located in Jurong, Punggol and Tampines.
How to Get Started
Participation
Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing who do not require adaptation for the technical or physical aspects of a sport may consider participating in mainstream recreational sports activities and community-based programmes open to the general public. You may reach out to inclusivesport@sport.gov.sg if you would like to work with a service provider and require an interpreter or other support services.
Competitive Pathway
Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing compete under the Deaflympics, which is a separate international multi-sport event organised specifically for deaf athletes. To compete in any Deaf Games or Championship (Deaflympics, Asia Pacific Deaf Games), the participant must meet the following criteria:
Must be deaf or hard of hearing, diagnosed with a hearing loss of at least 55dB per tone average in the better ear.
For additional guidance, you can refer to the Deaflympics sports list for sport recommendations.
Deaf athletes may also compete at local competitions such as the National School Games, Singapore Parasports Championships, and GetActive! Singapore Pesta Sukan.
Gym Orientation
Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing who are looking to use the gym independently may attend a gym orientation session to help you familiarise yourself with the layout and equipment.
Some of our newer and rejuvenated ActiveSG gyms, such as Hougang and Queenstown, are fitted with a hearing loop system. These hearing loops transmit sound signals directly to hearing aids or cochlear implants, making it easier to receive important announcements in the gym.
Find out more about the gym orientation programme for persons with disabilities.
Sign Language interpreter: Should you require Sign Language interpreter, do let us know and we can look into arranging one for you.
